GPS Devices A GPS or global positioning system is used to determine a particular location by using signals from satellites that are orbiting the Earth. It works just about anywhere on the planet, including most remote locations. To be able to successfully use a GPS system, all you need is the receiver and a sky that is clear enough to receive signals from satellites.

Types of GPS Devices:
1. A GPS mice or RS232 Receiver. This is a device without a screen, many times in a pocket-PC or Palm PDA and needs a computer to run.
2. A self-contained receiver with a screen where the computer is in the receiver.
3. A more sophisticated device usually for professional use in agriculture, mapping, oil and gas, military, safety, etc. They often have extra receivers and antennas for better accuracy.
4. A dedicated system for single purpose use, such as a car GPS. This uses maps from the manufacturer of the device. You can take this system from one car to another.
5. Very special devices that are used in car tracking systems and child-locator devices. Both use a chip to determine location and a wireless phone to get this information over distances, like the Internet.
6. Phones with a built-in GPS receiver. The phone downloads maps automatically and allows you to see specific locations.

Common uses for a GPS system include vehicle navigation, tracking business assets, mapping outdoor recreation (hunting, fishing, etc,) and sporting. The GPS is now helping in saving property and lives throughout the country. Many fire, police and emergency units are able to use a GPS system to determine the nearest vehicle to an emergency. This enables the quickest response when needed.

Advantages of a GPS System:
1. Equipped with a ‘panic’ button
2. Can be used to locate family, pet or child.
3. You will never lose your car when out.
4. If your car is ever stolen, the system will track the car.
5. Ensures you will never be lost.
6. Can be used to detect problems structurally in buildings and roads.
